Steven Joyce, Independent Chair

Steven joined the NZME Board as Chair on 3 June 2025.

An accomplished businessman and politician, Steven established and built media company RadioWorks NZ over 14 years, then served as campaign chair for the National Party for five general elections and as a Cabinet Minister for nine years. During his time in government, he was responsible for a number of portfolios including Finance, Infrastructure, Economic Development, Transport, Communications and IT. This has given him an excellent understanding of the public sector and a range of industries, which complements his success at establishing and growing his own business.

Steven currently runs his own consultancy business, Joyce Advisory Ltd and is an Independent Director of Winton Land Ltd, The Icehouse Ltd, and Icehouse Ventures Ltd. He is also an independent board adviser to project management firm RCP New Zealand Ltd.

In the 2025 King’s Birthday Honours, Steven was made a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for his services as a Member of Parliament. He has also written a best-selling memoir on his time in politics “On the Record”, and has been a regular commentator for the Weekend Herald for the last five years.

Carol Campbell, Independent Director

Carol Campbell is a Chartered Accountant and Fellow of CAANZ and Chartered member of the Institute of Directors. Carol was a partner at Ernst; Young for over 25 years and has been a professional Director for the last 10 years. Carol has extensive financial experience and a sound understanding of efficient board governance and Chairs NZME's Audit and Risk Committee.

Carol is a director of NZ Post Limited, Kiwibank Limited, T&G Global Limited, Asset Plus Limited, Chubb Insurance Limited and a number of other private companies.

Sussan Turner, Independent Director

For the past 25 years, Sussan has held senior leadership roles across media companies, including Group CEO of MediaWorks, Managing Director of Radio Otago, and CEO of RadioWorks.

She is currently Group CEO and Director of Aspire2 Group Limited, one of the leading tertiary education groups in New Zealand, and is passionate about building executive teams and company cultures.

Sussan has extensive experience as a director and is currently Pro-chancellor of Auckland University of Technology and Co-Chair of Organic Initiative Limited.

Guy Horrocks, Independent Director

Guy established himself as an early pioneer of the mobile app industry co-founding the worlds first commercial iPhone app company in 2007, Polar Bear Farm.

He is one of a number of high-powered, experienced New Zealand entrepeneurs who've built internationally successful digital enterprises - only to return to New Zealand to escape the worst of the impacts of Covid-19 on their adopted homes.

With clients including Expedia, DreamWorks, HBO, OREO, CNN, Time Magazine as well as The New Zealand Herald, Horrocks helped launch over 100 mobile apps with his award-winning mobile agency Carnival Labs, many of which were featured by Apple.

Guy Horrocks has since launched a new real-time data warehouse called SOLVE.

Jim Grenon, Non - independent Director

Jim joined the NZME Board in June 2025. 

He is a seasoned executive and investor with over 35 years of experience in organisational growth, operational improvement and corporate turnarounds, primarily in Canada and the United States. With academic training in both law and economics, Jim brings a multidisciplinary perspective to business leadership and governance.

He has served on the boards of nine public companies and business trusts. His directorships have included Canadian Natural Resources Limited—one of Canada’s most valuable public companies—and Foremost Income Trust, a leading industrial equipment manufacturer. His governance experience spans companies listed on the Vancouver, Toronto, and New York Stock Exchanges, and includes extensive service on a variety of board committees.

In 1995, Jim founded TOM Capital in Calgary, Canada, where he remains the primary investor and an active shareholder. TOM Capital manages a diverse portfolio of private companies engaged in manufacturing, biofuels development, cloud-based payment systems, and real estate operations.
