Using UTM Codes for URL Tracking

A guide on how to use UTM codes for tracking URLs in GA4 and Facebook.

Clients will sometimes ask for UTM codes for their URLs.

You can use this UTM builder: https://ga-dev-tools.google/campaign-url-builder/

Do not use the utm_campaign field as it will not show in GA4 for Google Ads � it will show the name of the Google Ads campaign instead of the value in the utm_campaign field.

In GA4 the UTM data shows under:

  • Source = utm_source
  • Medium = utm_medium
  • Manual ad content = utm_content
  • Manual term = utm_term

For Facebook, the UTM Code needs to have source=facebook and medium=ppc so it shows in the correct places for GA4 reporting.
