How to Set Up and Use Bonzai for Digital Advertising

A comprehensive guide on setting up placements, exporting tags, and pulling reports in Bonzai.

In this doc:

  • How to set up a new placement in Bonzai
  • How to export tags for GAM
  • How to pull reports from Bonzai

Intro to Bonzai

Bonzai is one of the two systems (alongside Celtra) that we use to build dynamic digital creative in-house. From this system, we can export a tag to run from GAM and pull post-analysis reporting.

Open https://studio.bonzai.co/console/brands.

Bonzai is organised by advertisers or brands. Find the brand that is relevant to your campaign. The most recently edited brand will be at the top, so if the creative has been recently built it should be at the top.

When you open a brand, you will see a list of campaigns. Campaigns are set up by Dan when he builds the creative. Find the relevant campaign. Once you're in your campaign you can check the creative and set up placements.

Setting up placements

The purpose of a placement is so you can generate a tag for your creative. You can make multiple placements if you want your reporting to be more organised.

How many placements should I set up?

A good trick is to set up a placement per line you have booked in GAM.

In Bonzai, as opposed to Celtra, you can assign multiple creatives to one placement. When you pull the report, results break down by creative. So the reason you would want to create multiple placements is if you'll need to filter your post-analysis by metrics other than creative.

For example, if you have one piece of creative in Bonzai, but this creative is to run against two lines in GAM (e.g. one line targeted to Auckland, one targeted to Wellington), you are best to set up an Auckland placement and a Wellington placement. This means that when you come back to report on the creative you can split the report by placement. However, you would only have to do this if the lines are running concurrently. If the lines are running at different times, you could use the same placement, and pull the report by date range instead.

How to set up a placement?

Within your campaign, navigate to the placement tab.

In the top right corner select > + New > Placement.

| Placement name | This will show in your report so make it clear for your own reference. Can copy creative name for easier matching. |
|----------------|-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------|
| Placement ID | I usually copy my placement name here. |
| Network | DFP |
| Platform | Select all platforms your ad will be running on e.g. Big reveal - Web only, Dynamic showcase - In-App and Web, 970x250/300x600 - Web only, 300x250 - In-App and Web |
| Supports iFrame| Display/Big reveal – No, Dynamic Showcase - Yes |
| Click-through URL (Optional) | If you have no URL built in your creative, add the click URL/tracker here. |
| Additional Served Impression Trackers | Add your impression tracker here if relevant. Then add on %%CACHEBUSTER%% to the end of the impression tracker. |
| IAS Viewable Script | Add your IAS tracker here if required. Find out more about IAS trackers here. Please note this feature has not been tested with a client so far. |

*Fields not listed above can be left blank.

Now that you have a placement, generate the tag. In the top right corner, select Get tag.

Tick your placement. The creatives that can be assigned to your placement will pop up in the right-hand box. If nothing shows in the box, it means the creatives are not published. Go back to the creative tab and click the three dots on the right end of your creative. Select Publish. Now your creatives should show. Tick the creatives you want to assign to the placement and select continue.

Bonzai will now generate a tag each for In-App and a tag for Web - copy each whole tag to copy into GAM.

GAM > New creative > Custom creative template > Bonzai

  • Copy the whole tag into the field
  • Select the relevant Creative type > Big Reveal, Desktop Truskin or Other for everything else.
  • Save and preview, check the click-through
  • If you are using a creative size which can run on app or web (e.g. 300x250) you'll need to assign app and web creative targets, so the compatible tag runs on the correct platform.

URLs in Bonzai

There are two ways to input URLs into Bonzai.

Within the creative

  • Most often, Dan will build the URL into the creative. If the URL is in the creative, you do not need to put it into the placement. However, always double-check the URL you have been given matches the one that has been built in (you can click the creative preview to check where it lands).
  • Implementing URLs within the creative is the only option if your creative has multiple hotspots directing to different URLs.

Within the placement

  • You can put the URL in the placement if there is no URL defined in the creative.
  • You can use this option in the case you have the same creative that needs to have different URLs for different lines e.g. if a campaign is running the same creative across multiple regions but wants to track the regions separately via separate click trackers (example).
  • This option will not work if the creative has multiple URL hotspots as you can only input one click URL into the placement.
  • To remove the URL from the creative, from the creative build screen, remove the URL from the hotspot and select "Use from placement".

Reporting

Navigate to your campaign > Select the graph on the right > "Analyse Campaign".

Here you will be taken to the analytics screen for your campaign. Select the date range in the top right corner to cover the date range of your campaign. Select the arrow next to the date filter to Download campaign report. Change the report type to Consolidated unless you want your results split by day.

Bonzai will export a full report of all the possible metrics. It's a bit of an overload of info, so you can filter in excel to the relevant results:

  • Served impressions
  • Total interactions
  • Click-through
  • Video completes (if required)
  • Hotspot elements (if required)
