Headliner Ad Format Guide
Instructions for setting up the responsive expandable ad format
As part of the 2024 Redesign project, we are introducing the responsive expandable ad format. This ad format:
- Is only available on desktop - web.
- Has the same position as leaderboard ads (pos = 1).
- Once sold, will appear on every page where leaderboard ads may appear, including NZH home page, NZH section pages, NZH article pages.
- Will be sold expanded by default.
Sizes
Expanded:
- Static image: 970x545
- Video: 16:9, or 970x545
Collapsed:
- Static image: 970x250
Note that only image creatives are eligible to be served in collapsed state (no video), in order to maintain the 16:9 video aspect ratio and to accommodate for only the most common use cases for these ads.
Trafficking Notes
Scenario 1: Expanded creative is a static image, collapsed creative is a static image
- Example line item: https://admanager.google.com/83069739#delivery/line_item/detail/line_item_id=6632654857&line_item=true&li_tab=settings
- Line item type: Choose a Sponsorship (4) type, with Priority value 1 or 2
- Expected creatives: 970x250
- Line item custom targeting:
- pos: 1
- Creative setup:
- Example creative: https://admanager.google.com/83069739#creatives/creative/detail/line_item_id=6632654857&creative_id=138466856054
- Add a single creative with size 970x250
- Select Custom creative template, search for the template name Headliner, select this template, click Continue
- Under User-defined variables:
- *ClickURL: The click-through URL for the creatives
- *Collapsed Image: A .jpg, .png or .gif file sized 970x250
- Expanded Image: A .jpg, .png or .gif file sized 970x545.
- Expanded Video: Leave empty.
- Show Ad Expanded: Always input 1 for now (as the ad will be sold expanded by default)
- Save and preview creative
NB: Fields with the asterisk * indicates mandatory fields in the template.
Scenario 2: Expanded creative is a video, collapsed creative is a static image

- Line item type: Choose a Sponsorship (4) type, with Priority value 1 or 2
- Expected creatives: 970x250
- Line item custom targeting:

- Add a single creative with size 970x250
- Select Custom creative template, search for the template name Headliner, select this template, click Continue

- Expanded Video: A URL to the 16:9 video’s .mp4 file. Please ensure client has supplied the correct video creative of the correct aspect ratio 16:9 before setting up the template.
- Show Ad Expanded: Always input 1 for now (as the ad will be sold expanded by default)
- Save and preview creative
